Directed by Calmatic with LeBron James and Maverick Carter as producers, the House Party remake is being declined by critics.

Film critics are regretting their return to House Party. The reboot of the 1990 classic starring Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin of hip-hop duo Kid ‘N’ Play, its 2023 adaptation stars Tosin Cole and Jacob Latimore, executive produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter of SpringHill Company.

Directed by Calmatic, the film centers Kevin (Latimore) and Damon (Cole), two aspiring club promoters and friends who find luck by hosting a house party at LeBron James’ home, where they provided a cleaning service. Also in the film are DC Young Fly, Karen Obilom, Melvin Gregg, with appearances from Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Tinashe and more.

The film held its premiere at the historic TCL Chinese 6 Theatre in Hollywood on Wednesday night (January 11).

“I know there’s a lot of talk about remakes and you can’t touch a classic and all that kind of stuff, but I feel like a property like House Party should be remade every 10 years,” Calmatic told Yahoo! Entertainment.

He continued, “I’m just glad I was able to come in at this point in the culture and give a snapshot of what’s going on right now.”

However, some critics are wishing they passed up the invite, as the film currently has a 24 percent Tomatometer and 58 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Injecting aspects of social media and clout chasing culture, and old school music into an updated feature does not add spin, depth, or perspective to a reboot,” wrote Valerie Complex of Deadline Hollywood Daily.

“An occasional chuckle may escape from time to time. But a grimace or sad trombone’s “womp” is the primary reaction. ‘House Party’ is incoherent and dull,” said ‘DarkSkyLady’ from Wealth of Geeks.

House Party is currently in select theaters.
