During a Vanity Fair lie detector test video with Janelle Monáe and Kate Hudson, the Glass Onion actress briefly discussed Donald Glover.
Looks like Janelle Monáe isn’t sweating Donald Glover as competition. The singer, actress and author was recently featured in a Vanity Fair lie detector test with Knives Out: Glass Onion co-star Kate Hudson where she was asked about Glover.
With Monáe hooked up to a lie detector machine in the video, Hudson showed the eight-time Grammy Award nominee a photo of Glover, mentioning that the two were both performers at the 2019 Coachella Festival. Hudson then pointed out that both Monáe and Glover are multi-hyphenate talents before asking the “Pynk” singer if she thinks she’s the better “actress/singer/dancer.” Monáe, 37, sighed and answered, “You know what, Childish? I love you, but I think yes. I mean, should I lie?”
Although Monáe has not released an album since 2018’s Dirty Computer, the triple threat has been in her acting bag in recent time, starring in 2019 Harriet Tubman biographical film Harriet, portraying late feminist activist Dorothy Jean Ridley in 2020’s The Glorias followed by thriller Antebellum in the same year. In April, Monáe came out as non-binary (although she still uses she/her pronouns) and released debut futuristic fiction book The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer.
Also in the Vanity Fair video Monáe was asked whether she considers herself more extra than actor Billy Porter or fellow singer-actress Lady Gaga.
“Billy is extra in the best possible ways,” Monáe said. “I would say it depends on the day.”
On Lady Gage, she continued, “I actually don’t know. When we started in the industry close together, I was doing my version of extra, and she was doing her version of extra,” Monáe said. “I haven’t given up on my extra, and she hasn’t given up on hers.”
