Spider-Man is taking a blast to the past. On Thursday (February 9), Variety reported that a Spider-Man Noir live-action series based on the Marvel comic is in the works at Amazon, written and executive-produced by Oren Uziel (The Lost City). The currently-untitled black-and-white series will be set in in 1930s New York City, following “an older, grizzled superhero.” A source tells Variety that the show will be set in its own universe, without Peter Parker being the protagonist.
The Spider-Man Noir superhero began appearing in Marvel Comics in 2009, living in New York during the Great Depression. Bitten by a spider hidden in a stolen artifact, the fictional character – also named Peter Parker – becomes a human mutate, having visions of a spider-god who grants him superpowers.
“The young rabble-rouser Peter Parker is outraged at the injustices of the Depression,” reads the character’s description on the Marvel website. “His anger is matched only by his impassioned goal to prove his Uncle Ben was murdered by The Goblin and his goons. Driven by the idealism and values his Aunt May and Uncle Ben instilled in him, Peter believes that if those in power can’t be trusted, then it’s the responsibility of the people to remove them.”
The character has appeared in animated adaptations of Spider-Man, including Disney XD series Ultimate Spider-Man, voiced by Milo Ventimiglia, and later voiced by Nicolas Cage in 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The latter’s follow-up, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, releases to theaters in June 2023.
‘Noir’ makes the second live-action television project produced by Sony. The studio has also partnered with Prime Video and MGM+ on Silk: Spider Society, which centers Marvel character Cindy Moon.
