Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” has returned to the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first song to have four distinct No. 1 runs.

Mariah Carey’s “Queen of Christmas” title is undisputed. On Monday (December 12), Billboard reported that Carey’s 1994 classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has returned to No. 1 during its ninth week atop the Hot 100 and becoming the first song to have four distinct runs in the ranking. The chart ranks top songs based on “streaming and/or sales activity from more than 200 territories around the world- including the U.S.”

Carey’s holiday anthem was released on her Merry Christmas album in 1994 and has since hit the Billboard Hot 100’s top ten for the first time in December 2017, the top five during the 2018 holiday season and reigning at No. 1 in 2019 (for three weeks), 2020 (for two weeks) and 2021 (for three weeks).

To extend her Christmas celebration, this month, Carey is holding a ‘Merry Christmas to All!’ holiday revue, which concludes on Tuesday (December 13) at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. The shows are slated to be Carey’s last before 2022 ends, and follows her debut children’s book The Christmas Princess, which released last month. The book is co-authored by Carey and Michaela Angela Davis (who also co-wrote Carey’s 2020 autobiography, The Meaning of Mariah Carey), with illustrations by Fuuji Takashi,

Although “All I Want for Christmas Is You” didn’t become a number-one hit until 2019, Carey told the Los Angeles Times in 2020 that she had fond memories of writing the song.

“It was kind of an accident,” she said. “When I did that first Christmas album, ‘Merry Christmas,‘ it was pretty early in my career. But in this case, I was just sitting there, coming up with this melody, in a dark house with a Christmas tree.”
