Kendrick Lamar – Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers ALBUM REVIEW : hiphopheads
I don’t think the outsider has to neccesarily be homophobic. It’s true there are a lot of anti trans/gay views in America specifically still, but there is also a large portion of the population that just has never thought about these issues(because they don’t effect them) or are just ignorant to peoples struggles who walk in those shoes. With regards to slurs, the song already elaborates its wrong, but I don’t think the work or artist are homophobic for using them when they are using their artistic license.
If there was a movie made to authentically represent the Civil War, and not a single White southern plantation owner uses the N word with the hard R, then you are being dishonest and misleading your audience who will come away thinking the southerners were just passionate nice people. When it is used, I don’t think it makes the person who wrote the word in the script , the actor who says it, or the work as a whole racist. But again, I think it depends on context.
I hate that the F slur exists and is used so much, but if Kendrick doesn’t say it in his song, then his message wouldn’t be as poignant and real. Kodak controversy is fair game. People bugging about the f word need to realize good art is sometimes provoking. Auntie Diaries is a gem in hiphop, and I hope to see more artists think about these things in the space.
Good review by Fantano. He’s wildin on mirror, but very good critique of Kendrick and his progression as an artist.
