On Wednesday, Pusha-T premiered his new video for “Hear Me Clearly”. The rapper also spoke with Complex about his forthcoming album.
It’s Pusha-T season. The rapper has just released the video for “Hear Me Clearly” which appears on the I Know NIGO! compilation. Earlier in the day, Complex published a story where the rapper talked about the inspiration behind his forthcoming album and his top three “coke rappers.”
“Hov [JAY-Z] is first, because he made Reasonable Doubt, and that is the grail of all drug levels, without being all about drugs. It spoke more to the lifestyle,” Push said, revealing his all-time coke rap greats. “Lyrically, I’m going to say that I’m next. And I’ll say Jeezy is third, because I don’t believe there was a stronger moment in time than Trap or Die.”
Push also spoke about collaborating with JAY-Z, which will appear on his 2022 follow-up to DAYTONA.
“I reach out to him because I know it’s something that I can’t say. It’s dope, and it should be inspiring when you hear it. To say some of the most outlandish shit, and it actually be true, that should be aspirational to all rap artists,” he said.
Earlier in the interview, Push admitted that coke rap is a “lazy way of describing” his content, he claims it’s better than being called a “mixtape rapper” which Pharrell Williams warned after hearing an early cut of “Hear Me Clearly.”
“He was being snide and nasty,” recalled Push about Williams’ comment. “He knows that my heart is mixtape rap. I only like mixtape verses actually. I’ve known him my whole life, and there was a time in which we both had the same taste in mixtape verses. And that’s a time that I try to get him to revisit a lot, in dealing with me. I particularly believe that our success and our greatness is when we’re in those pockets.”
