With Hot 97 DJs warming up everyone there with classic and popular rap tracks alike, the crowd was not only excited for Dave’s arrival but for the HDIGH? midnight release. Screens throughout the venue showed interviews of him talking about the creation of the project, his inspiration, Nipsey Hustle, and the drive he has to continue making music that is true and unique to his evolution as an artist.
Once East finally arrived, he got on the mic and lavished thanks and appreciation on everyone in attendance and those who supported him on this journey. Dave then played what he says was his favorite song on the album at the time, “Unbelievable”, which features the artist whose likeness Dave portrays in “Wu-Tang : An American Saga” – Method Man.
The album itself is an introspective look at Dave East’s rise and upbringing, hence the album name “How Did I Get Here?” and the photo of Dave and his mother on the cover. With features from Benny the Butcher (who’s also released a project today), Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, Kalan Fr.Fr and Tae tha Truth, Dave’s sharp lyricism paints a beautiful struggle. Songs like “John Lennon” delve into his mindset (and the worry about a fan running up on him), to his more soulful and gentle approach to relationships on “Deeper Than Love” — reflecting a broad range of emotion that Dave taps into on this project.
And with tracks like “1,000 Miles” and “Gregory Hines,” which talk about his come up, to the grand opening of his own bodega in his Harlem hometown, Dave East pays homage to his origins and the rocky path he walked to get here.
HDIGH? drops Friday, March 11 on all platforms.
